WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?
There are many different factors that can contribute to hair loss, including:
-
Genetics: Hereditary hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss and affects both men and women. In men, this condition is known as male pattern baldness, and in women, it is known as female pattern hair loss.
-
Hormonal changes: Hormonal imbalances can cause hair loss, such as during pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause. Hormonal changes can also cause hair loss in individuals with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disorders.
-
Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as alopecia areata, scalp infections, and autoimmune disorders can cause hair loss.
-
Medications: Some medications can cause hair loss as a side effect. Chemotherapy is a well-known cause of hair loss, but other medications like blood thinners, antidepressants, and anti-inflammatory drugs can also contribute to hair loss.
-
Nutritional deficiencies: Nutritional deficiencies, such as low levels of iron, protein, and vitamin D, can contribute to hair loss.
-
Physical or emotional stress: Physical or emotional stress can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium, which causes hair to enter a resting phase and fall out more easily.
-
Hairstyles and treatments: Certain hairstyles and hair treatments, such as tight braids, ponytails, and chemical treatments, can damage hair and cause it to fall out.
MALE PATTERN BALDNESS
More than 50% of men will experience male pattern baldness. While there are genetic factors at play, hormone imbalances can also contribute.

FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS
About 40-45% of women will experience female pattern baldness. Just as in men, genetics and hormones contribute to this.

STRESS HAIR LOSS
It's normal to lose between 50-100 hairs a day, about the size of a quarter. Anything more than that is cause for concern. Stress, or serious illness, can cause rapid hair loss.
